Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a broad class of several thousand man-made organic chemicals, are ubiquitous in the environment. These chemicals are an emerging public health concern as they have been found in the blood of animals and humans worldwide. Since 2022, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has been investigating distributions of PFAS in surface waters across the state. This session will provide an overview of the monitoring program and a look into the presence of PFAS in surface waters and aquatic organisms statewide.
